- n. The act or practice of removing the tassel (male inflorescence) from growing Indian corn. In breeding for improved stock, weak plants are detasseled to eliminate their pollen, and where cross-fertilization is sought the plants destined to bear the ears are thus treated. Detasseling has been performed experimentally on part of the rows in fields to observe the effect on the yield of grain and forage, with ambiguous results.
