Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
- n. The typical and leading genus of marsupial implacental mammals of the family Didelphyidœ, containing the American opossums which are not web-footed. The genus formerly covered nearly or quite all the marsupials. The species are terrestrial and arboreal, but not aquatic, the water-opossums being separated under the name Chironectes. The pouch is usually well developed, as in the best-known species, D. virginiana, the common opossum of the United States, but is rudimentary in some of the South American forms. See Didelphyidœ, opossum.
