- n. The typical and only genus of the subfamily Dipodomyinæ. D. phillipsi inhabits the Pacific coast region of the United States and Mexico. It is about four inches long, with the tail half as long again; it has brown or gray upper parts and snowy under parts, a white stripe along each side of the tail, and another over the hips. A closely related species or variety, D. ordi, inhabits the interior Rocky Mountain region. They are known as kangaroo-rats, from the shape of the body and limbs and their great power of leaping.
