- n. A kind of magic lantern or stereopticon constructed by an Alsatian painter, Philip de Loutherbourg, in London about 1780. A set of colored slides was made for it by the painter Gainsborough. The machine and slides were exhibited at the Grosvenor gallery in London in 1885.
