  1. Middle English ekename, ekname (= Icelandic auknafn = Swedish öknamn = Danish ögenavn), an added name, from eke, an addition, increase, eken, add, + name, name: see eke and name. Hence, by misdividing an ekename as a nekename, the form nickname, q. v.
