1. n. A genus of subterranean fungi, belonging to the Tuberaceæ. Elaphomyces granulatus, the common species, produces nearly spherical tuber-like conceptacles, varying from the size of a hazelnut to that of a walnut. The surface is covered with fine warts. The contents consist chiefly of the black spores, from 1 to 8 in each ascus.
