1. n. A neutral principle (C₂₀H₂₈O₅) extracted by alcohol from elaterium. When pure it forms colorless hexagonal, crystals, which are odorless and have a bitter, acrid taste. It is used in medicine in minute doses as a very powerful hydragogue cathartic.
