  1. Middle Latin, an object, from Latin en(t-)s, present participle of esse, be (first used, says Priscian, by Julius Cæsar); formed after Greek ω῎ν (ὀντ-); the earlier form *sen(t-)s appears in absen(t-)s, English absent, præ-sen(t-)s, English present. See am (under be), and cf. essence.
