1. A family of dicotyledonous choripetalous plants of the order Rosales, typified by the genus Escallonia (which see), included by many authors in the Saxifragaceæ. It includes 25 genera of trees and shrubs, mostly natives of the southern hemisphere. Itea (which see) is the only genus which occurs in the United States.
