I think adopting some of the successful tricks of other genres/fandoms is something SF/F cons should consider on the whole.

All my big, long-term fandoms Trek, SG1 and SGA, Angel,BSG have had both characters I've cared about AND SF or fantasy settings, and almost all the stories I've written -- and the ones I've read and most enjoyed over the years -- have been set in those canon universes rather than in contemporary Earth AUs, and have either exploited the possibilities presented by them or have enhanced them by exploring them and fleshing them out.
