1. In Latreille's system of classification, the third family of the homopterous hemipterans, corresponding to the Linnean genus Coccus; the scale-insects, now forming a family Coccidæ, of the suborder Monomera of Westwood. The cochineal, Coccus cacti, is a species of this group. (See cut under Coccus.) Coccus polonicus is the scarlet-grain of Poland.
