1. n. A glove-tightener: an eighteenth-century device for holding up the long gloves worn by women. Glove-tightens were made of plaited horsehair, ribbons, etc., and fastened the glove above the elbow. Also called glove-band and glove-top. A. M. Earle, Costume of Colonial Times, p. 118.
