- Noting a resinous acid extracted from the leaves of Gymnema sylvestris, indigenous in India. The leaves, when chewed, produce the curious effect of temporarily destroying the sense of taste as respects sweet and bitter, so that such substances as sugar and quinine become indistinguishable in the mouth.
