1. n. A genus of monocotyledonous plants, founded by Linnæus in 1753, belonging to the natural order Liliaceæ, tribe Narthecieæ, with petioled radical leaves, those of the stem few and small, small flowers in dense racemes, the stamens little longer than the perianth, and three very short styles. Only one species is known, H. bullata, a botanical rarity of the United States, growing in wet places in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. It is a very handsome plant.
