1. n. A genus of dicotyledonous gamopetalousplants, belonging to the natural order Rubiaceæ, and giving name to a tribe Henriquezieœ. The 4-cleft limb of the calyx is deciduous by a transverse section; there are 5 slender stamens in the throat of the corolla; the capsule is large, woody, 2-celled, 2-valved, and shaped like a bean; and the cells are 4-seeded. The genus includes four species of handsome trees, natives of northern Brazil and Venezuela, with stout branches and verticillate, leathery, oblong or obovate, entire leaves. The rose-colored flowers are in dense terminal panicles.
