1. n. A genus of innocuous colubriform serpents, having the rostral plate enlarged and recurved. There are several North American species, chiefly known as hognosed snakes, as H. simus or H. platyrhinus. They are unsightly blotched reptiles, with flattened heads, strikingly similar to some venomous serpents, as the copperhead or moccasin, but are perfectly harmless. Palisot de Beauvois, 1799.
2. n. [lowercase] A serpent of the genus Heterodon. Also heterodont.
3. n. One of several genera of mammals and mollusks.
