In Cuvier's system of classification, the second order of Infusoria or Animalcula: approximately equivalent to Protozoa, though including some Infusoria proper, as Urceolaria, with Cercaria (Spermatozoa), Vibrio, Proteus, Monas, Volvox, etc. It is thus a heterogeneous group, like the Polygastrica of Ehrenberg.
