- n. A North American shrub or small tree, Ptelea trifoliata, belonging to the rue family, having trifoliate leaves, and small greenish-white flowers in terminal cymes. The fruit is a 2-celled and 2-seeded samara, winged all around, bitter, and said to be used as a substitute for hops. Also called
wafer-ash .
