- noun In geology, an extensive series of strata in the Tyrolese and Swiss Alps and in England lying between the Trias formation and the typical Lias above: more generally known as Rhætic beds, and in England as the Penarth beds. English geologists generally include this formation with the Trias, but on the Continent it is usually placed with the Lias.
