  • noun A genus of Central and South American shrubs or trees, of the natural order Rubiaceæ, tribe Mussændeæ, type of the old tribe Isertieæ, having flowers with long tubular corollas, the limb divided into 5 or 6 woolly segments, large opposite and usually coriaceous leaves, and 2 large stipules. The flowers are very showy, being scarlet or sometimes white or yellow.
