From Middle English ithe, ythe, uthe, from Old English ȳþ ("wave, billow, flood, sea, liquid, water"), from Proto-Germanic *unþiz, *unþijō (“wave”), from Proto-Indo-European *unt-, *und- (“wave”), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *awe-, *aw- (“to water, wet, moisten, flood”). Cognate with German Unde ("flood, wave"), Icelandic unnur ("wave"), Latin unda ("wave").
