  1. Also kakerlak, kakerlac; from Dutch kakkerlak, German kakerlak (French kakerla, cancrelat, cockroach, kakerlaque, chacrelas, albino), said to be of South American origin, but perhaps representing a perversion of the original of Spanish cucaracha, English cockroach. The sense ‘albino’ seems to be an allusion to the cockroach's shrinking from the light.
