- n. A machine for cutting a keyway or slot for a spline. Portable machines designed to cut a keyway in a piece of shafting, while in position, are essentially small milling-machines operated by hand or by a motor, or by means of flexible shafting, and having narrow-face cutters for milling out the slot. Larger machines are modifications of the slotting-machine or draw stroke shapers. Also called
