- n. In Greek antiquity, a roll or knot of hair on the head. By some authorities it is taken as the knot or tuft of hair above the forehead familiar in the Apollo Belvedere (see cut under
Hellenistic ); the latest students, however, consider it to be a gathering of the hair behind the head, often held in place by a pin or other ornament.
