  • n. A smoked pork sausage with garlic, originating in Eastern Europe.

Etymologies

From Ukrainian ковбаса (kovbasá, "sausage"), a very early Slavic borrowing with no clear antecedent. The Slavic variants point to several reconstructed forms from Proto-Slavic *kъlbasa, *klobasa, *kobasa. It is considered most likely to be borrowed from Turkic language; compare Turkish külbastı ("roasted meat"), from kül ("ash"), from Old Turkic (Uyghuric) kül, from Proto-Turkic *kül (“ashes”).
