  • noun A genus of tropical American trees belonging to the gamopetalous order Sapotaceæ, tribe Pouterieæ, having a 4-parted calyx, 5 fertile and 5 abortive stamens, a 4-celled ovary, and fleshy fruit. Five species are known, natives of the West Indies and Brazil.
