Definitions
Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
- n. A genus of monocotyle donous plants, type of order Lemnaceæ. It is distinguished from
Wolffia , the only other genus of the order, by having the flowers developed on the margin of the frond instead of from a pit in the upper surface. Distributed about the temperate and tropical regions of the world are seven species, known as duckweed, some of them the smallest of flowering plants, consisting of a frond that floats on the surface of the water, and bears below a few thread-like roots, and above one or more monœcious flowers.
GNU Webster's 1913
