1. n. A genus of very large sooty shearwaters, of the family Procellariidæ. The bill and feet are robust, the nasal tubes long, and the wings and tail very short; the plumage is fuliginous, with white markings on the head. Two species, M. æquinoctialis and M. conspicillatus, inhabit southern seas. Reichenbach, 1850.
