- A cohort (alliance of Lindley) of dicotyledonous polypetalous plants belonging to the first series, Thalamiflorœ. It is characterized by the valvate calyxlobes or sepals, which are five in number, rarely fewer; by having the petals as many as the sepals or sometimes wanting; by stamens which are indefinite in number or monadelphous; and by an ovary with from three to an indefinite number of cells, rarely fewer. The cohort embraces 3 orders, Malvaceæ, Sterculiaceæ, and Tiliaceæ.
