1. n. A plant of the genus Mirabilis, M. Jalapa, native in tropical America, and common in flower-gardens; the four-o'clock. Its red, white, yellow, or variegated funnel-shaped flowers open, except in cloudy weather, only toward night; hence the names four-o'clock and afternoon-ladies.
