  • noun The Russian name for crude petroleum from the Caucasus, which has lost the more volatile hydrocarbons by exposure to the air. The name is also applied, but less properly, to the residue from the distillation of such petroleum after all illuminating oil has been driven off. This residue is properly called astatki (which see).
