- n. A genus of orchids of the tribe Vandeæ, type of subtribe Maxillarieæ, characterized by an erect concave lip with erect lateral lobes and a fleshy column. They are epiphytes arising from pseudobulbs, with usually one or two flat leaves which are coriaceous, thin, or slightly fleshy. The flowers are large or of medium size, often beautiful and fragrant. There are about 120 species, natives of tropical America.
