1. n. A plant of Alphonse de Candolle's fourth physiological group, consisting of those forms which are confined to climates whose mean annual temperature is between 14 and 0C. They are found on the plains of the north temperate zone in Europe, Asia, and North America, well northward, and in South America between latitudes 38 and 65S.
