  1. For *mortkin, from Old French mortekine, mortecine, morticine = Old Italian morticino, “any dead carrion” (Florio) (Irish muirtchenn = Welsh burgyn), from Middle Latin morticinum, a beast that has died of disease, neuter of Latin morticinus, that has died (as an animal), dead, hence carrion, from mor(t-)s, death: see mort. Cf. mortling.
