Also netup. neetup; from Narragansett *netop, Natick neetomp = Powhatan netoppu (Ojibwa nita), ‘my brother’ or ‘my kinsman,’ from ne-, a prefix, my, + weetompain, a friend, prob. from weetu-, weto-, dwell with, + -omp, an element meaning ‘man,’ and appearing also in Natick mugwomp (whence mugwump) and other words.
