But plenty of people in Silicon Valley think that Windows will soon find itself less relevant as the action shifts to nondesktop Internet devices like palmtops and game consoles -- areas where Microsoft hasn't dominated.
These nondesktop items are bound to far outnumber plain old computers, and Java, along with Sun's Jini networking technology, is designed to link devices and computers together so smoothly that the only operating system that really matters is the Net itself; your boxy machine that runs Windows will be only a widget in this world.
And no matter what you think of the iPad, it's another example of a nondesktop personal computer -- and, of course, there's no version of Windows on it.
