  • noun In agriculture, a crop which is employed to aid another crop in getting established, as in the practice of planting certain rapid-growing short-lived trees or bushes to shade the slow-growiug conifers in an intended conifer forest, or in the sowing of a straw crop to shade and shield a lawn seeding.
