  • noun In the Hawaiian Islands, a general name for plants of the genus Clermontia, belonging to the family Campanulaceæ. They yield a milky latex which is used by the natives as bird-lime. Clermontia macrocarpa bears fruit about the size of a crab-apple, which, though insipid, is eaten by the natives.
