  • noun A genus of acanthopterygian fishes, formerly used with wide and indefinite limits to cover many heterogeneous forms, variously separated by modern ichthyologists; now restricted to such species as the common yellow perches of Europe and North America, as Perca fluviatilis of the former and P. americana, lutea, or flavescens of the latter country, and made the type of the family Percidæ. See perch.
