- n. The typical genus of the subfamily Perognathinæ, having an upright antitragal lobe of the ear and the soles nearly naked. There are several species, as the tuft-tailed pocketmouse, P. penicillatus, and the fasciated, P. fasciatus, inhabiting the United states west of the Mississippi. They resemble mice, but have external cheek-pouches.
