  1. Noting an acid, C5H10(COOH)2. Several varieties are known. Normal or α-pimelic acid is heptane diacid, CO2H.(CH2)5COOH, and is formed by oxidizing suberone with concentrated nitric acid; it is crystalline and melts at 105° C. Beta-pimelic acid is formed when castor-oil is oxidized by nitric acid; it is crystalline and melts at 105.5–106° C. Gamma-pimelic acid is made by oxidizing menthol with potassium permanganate; it is crystalline and melts at 86–87.5° C. Isopimelic acid is made by boiling amylene bromide and potassium cyanide with water. It forms crystals which melt at 104° C. When camphoric acid is melted with caustic potash another variety is formed, isopropylsuccinic acid, (CH3)2CH.CH(COOH)CH2(COOH). It forms crystals that melt at 103° C.
