- The plantain family, an anomalous order of gamopetalous plants, little related to any other, characterized by the scarious corolla with alternate stamens; sepals, petals, and stamens each usually four; and the small entire two-celled pod, usually circumseissile. It includes 3 genero and over 200 species, nearly all of which belong to the typical genus Plantago, the: other genera, Bougueria and Littorella, being both monotypic.
