A genus of ornamental plants of the order Amaryllideæ and tribe Agaveæ, characterized by the long undivided raceme bearing twin flowers with a prominent and incurved tube dilated upward into thick, spreading lobes, by the conical ovary within the base of the perianth, and by the short, erect, tuberous rootstock. There are 3 species, natives of Mexico and Central America. They produce a tall unbranched wand-like stem, with a tuft of linear leaves at its base, and many showy fragrant white flowers clothing the upper portion. P. tuberosa is the tuberose.
