- noun A comprehensive term for certain diseases of the roots of the cultivated vine, caused by several fungi, such as Agaricus melleus, Dematophora necatrix, D. glomerata, Vibrissea hypogæa, etc., and frequently very destructive to the vineyards of southern Europe. The only really efficacious remedy is to remove and burn all roots showing traces of the disease.
