- n. That which brings about the precipitation or downfall of atmospheric moisture.
- n. That which causes or favors chemical precipitation; an apparatus for inducing precipitation. Specifically, a tank in which carbonates held in solution by free carbonic acid in water are precipitated by caustic lime, which neutralizes the free carbonic acid and permits the carbonates to fall to the bottom. This method of purifying water is used by dyers, and also in fitting hard water for use in steam-boilers.
