- noun A substance formed during proteolytic (notably tryptic) digestion. It is characterized by the readiness with which it combines with chlorin and bromine to form variously colored products. Of these, a bluish violet substance which contains 35 per cent. of bromine is especially characteristic. Chemically considered proteinochromogen is skatolaminoacetic acid, .
