- n. A genus of Paradiseidæ, belonging to the subfamily Epimachinæ, or slender-billed birds of paradise, having the tail not longer than the body, and a jugular shield of metallic plumes. The nostrils are feathered, whence the name. Four species of these beautiful birds inhabit Australia and New Guinea — P. paradisea, the rifle-bird, P. victoriæ, P. alberti, and P.
