  • noun A badge worn by a petty officer, sewed on the outside of the right or left sleeve (according as he belongs to the starboard or port watch) midway between the elbow and shoulder. It serves to indicate his rank and the particular specialty to which he is assigned, as master-at-arms, quartermaster, electrician, machinist, etc.
