- n. A genus of gallinaceous birds, type of subfamily Rollulinæ, having the hind claw rudimentary; the roulrouls or wood-quail. The species inhabit Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Malacca, and Tenasserim. The red-crested wood-quail is R. cristatus or roulroul, of a rich green color, with a long red crest; it lives in the woods in small flocks from the sea-level to a height of 4,000 feet. The female is lighter-colored, and lacks the red crest. Another roulroul is R. niger, sometimes generically separated as Melanoperdix(Jerdon, 1864). The genus is also called
Cryptonyxand Liponyx. See cut on following page.
