Definitions

from The Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia

  • n. In horticulture, the pruning of the roots of a tree or shrub; in agriculture, the cutting of the lateral roots of corn, cotton, etc., by the use of a knife or by close and deep cultivation when the crop is well established, on the theory that the growth is thereby thrown into the useful part. Such treatment has proved in general injurious to corn, but in the far South, apparently benefits cotton by checking the growth of weeds.
